Obituary for Neil G. Amos

Neil G. Amos
Neil G. Amos passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

He was born on October 3, 1939, to Earl and Helen Amos of Jefferson City, Missouri. He attended Central Missouri State and graduated with a B.S. degree in Education in 1961. He furthered his education at Peabody College (now Vanderbilt University), completing his Ed.D. in 1967.

He joined the College of Education faculty at Mississippi State University in 1968. He served in a number of positions, retiring in 1998 as the Head of Curriculum and Instruction. He served as a consultant for public school systems across the South, and particularly enjoyed his work with the Choctaw Tribe in Philadelphia. He served as President of the Mid South Educational Research Association.

Neil was passionately involved as a volunteer with OCH Regional Medical Center. He served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary and was appointed to the OCH Regional Board of Trustees, serving as Chair at the time of his death. In 2017, he was recognized as the OCH Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year. He loved his time at the hospital and regarded the friends he made there as part of his extended family.

He was equally as dedicated to Mississippi State Athletics and would talk football at every given opportunity.

He is survived by his three children: Marc Amos (Allyson) of Columbus, MS, Michelle Amos Leggette (Jim) of Starkville, MS, and Ashley Amos Simmons (Joc) of Huntsville, AL. He was very proud of all of his grandchildren: Sloan, Mallory and Abby Amos and Parrish, Hannah and Brantley Kate Simmons. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Lois Jean Dickenson.

A graveside service is scheduled for Sunday, August 22 at 4:00 p.m. at Memorial Garden Park.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial gift may do so to OCH Regional Medical Center (Hospital Equipment Fund), P.O. Box 1506, Starkville, MS 39760.
