Obituary for Vivian Price Barton

On Saturday, April 7, 2018, Vivian Price Barton passed peacefully from this world at Waverly Care Home in West Point, Mississippi. She was 95 years old and was attended by kind caregivers who sang “Jesus Loves Me” as she drew her last breath.
She was born Lois Vivian Price in Starkville, Mississippi on February 8, 1923. As the baby of the family, Vivian was cherished by her loving parents and seven lively siblings. She fondly remembered wading in the creek and playing with her feist dog Popeye and pet goat Fairview on the family farm in the Bell Schoolhouse Community. She learned the art of storytelling there and developed a rich vocabulary of colorful expressions.
Vivian spent most of her life in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. She attended school in Starkville and married William Barton from the Longview community. She was a crackerjack secretary for Bill’s free-lance civil engineering practice and amazingly earned her drivers’ license at age 45.
After Bill’s death she continued to live on North Jackson Street with her dear “Sis” Elise Price. She raised her girls there and grew flowers in her front beds that were the talk of the town. She loved growing tomatoes, made beautiful quilts and passionately researched family history. Those who loved her will attest that she was not shy in stating her opinions.
Vivian was blessed to have three grandchildren who hung the moon. She cooked, sewed for and cared for Colby, Mandy and Ryan as often as possible. She showed her love by preparing splendid holiday meals for the family that culminated in her perfectly crafted pecan pies.
Vivian was preceded in death by her infant daughter Linda Kaye Barton and 4 year old son William Meredith Barton III “Buster”; her husband William Meredith Barton Jr.; her loving and devoted parents – Robert Joshua Price and Leona Reese Price; her kind and caring sisters – Dorothy Elise Price “Sis” and May Price Gatlin and her rowdy pack of brothers – Frank, Robert, Jim, Bill and Harry Price.
She is survived by her daughters – Gail Barton (Richard Lowery) of Meridian, Jean Barton Mann (Rodger) of Starkville, Joyce Barton Brister (Freddie) of West Point; her grandchildren – Colby Brister (Allison), Mandy Brister Clark (Brandon) and Ryan Mann; her great granddaughters – Anna Colby and Evan Elizabeth Brister, her kind friend and caregiver – Berneice Bilbo; nieces - Patsy Gatlin Parrish, Harriette Price Mastin, Kaye Price Dawson, Faye Price York and nephew – Bill Price; numerous great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, Mississippi. A Memorial Service will follow at noon. Interment will be at Memorial Garden Park in Starkville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Palmer Home for Children or the Oktibbeha County Humane Society or the charity of your choice.
