Andrew Lee "AL"  Smith
Andrew Lee Smith, of Starkville, MS went home to be with the Lord on May 25. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Rachel Watson Smith. Lee is also survived by one sister, Tommie Lou Renard of Memphis. He leaves behind 4 children: Carol Lee Monroe (Bill), Tom (Tami), Tim (Rhonda) and Ted Smith. He leaves 5 grandchildren: Amy Monroe-O’Hora, Jason Monroe, Renee (Tyler) Wade, David and Brian Smith and 2 great-grandsons, Matthew and Seth O’Hora. Lee was born in Mantee, MS in 1921. He attended Cumberland High, Wood Junior College and Mississippi State. He graduated MSU in 1947 with honors in civil engineering. During World War II, Lee was a navigator for the B-24 bomber in Italy with 53 combat missions. Upon graduation from MSU, Lee began working for Chevron in New Orleans for 38 years, designing and building offshore rigs. Services for Mr. Smith will be on Wed. May 31, with viewing at 10:00 am and services at 11:00 am at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests honorarium to Old Cumberland Cemetery Fund, c/o Sue Cooper, 918 Old Cumberland Rd, Maben, MS 39750.
